Make People Feel Proud Of Their Smiles.

I am writing this glossary to teach basic dentistry words to the world. Do you always understand everything that your dentist tells you? Most of the people don’t and just hope to end up with a prettier smile and without an empty wallet.

Amalgam
Noun
In dentistry, amalgam is an alloy of mercury used to fill teeth cavities.
Example: The dentist filled up my tooth with amalgam.

Anesthesia
Noun
Insensitivity to pain, especially as artificially induced by the administration of gases or the injection of drugs before surgical operations.
Example: The dentist put anesthesia in my mouth, so I wouldn’t feel the pain.

Noun

Artificial crown
Noun
Artificial crowns are used most commonly to entirely cover a damaged tooth or to cover an implant
Example: My dentist recommended me to do an artificial crown.

Cavities
Noun
A cavity is a very small hole that forms on the surface of a tooth. Cavities are caused when sugars in the food we eat and bacteria in our mouths mix together, producing a mild acid that eats away at outer layer of our teeth (called enamel).
Example: “Most dentists fill cavities right away!”

Curettage
Noun
Curettage or scaling and root planing is a treatment that consists of removing the bacterial plaque that is located behind the gum and that deteriorates the bone that holds the teeth.
Example: The dental hygienist is in charge of doing the curettage.

Dental assistants are formally educated oral health care professionals and vital members of the oral health care team.

Noun

Infection
Noun
the process of infecting or the state of being infected.
Example: I have been informed of the risks of infection if I didn’t clean my tooth carefully.

Infections are mostly occurred during surgeries if the instruments that are being used are not well sterilized.
Maxillofacial
Adjective
relating to the mouth, jaw, face, and neck, or to medical treatment of this part of the body
Example: My dentist is also a maxillofacial surgeon.

Scrubs
Noun
Scrubs, sometimes called surgical scrubs or nursing scrubs, are the sanitary clothing worn by physicians, nurses, dentists and other workers involved in patient care
Example: I have to go to work in scrubs.

the administering of a sedative drug to produce a state of calm or sleep.
Example: I saw multiple patients under sedation at the dental office.

Sterilization
Noun
the process of making something free from bacteria or other living microorganisms.
Example: Every instrument has been through sterilization.

Surgery
Noun
The branch of medical practice that treats injuries, diseases, and deformities by the physical removal, repair, or readjustment of organs and tissues, often involving cutting into the body.
Example: We have to do a surgery to extract your tooth.

Example: The dental assistant told me to swallow the water.

Noun
The last tooth to come in at the back of each side of the upper and lower jaws.

I Made That Smile

It all started a random Monday evening. I received a call from my mom's boss at the Dental office offering me a job. I was surprised and excited at the same time. I was receiving a formation about sterilization. I felt like I was finally using my potential for a more serious job. My last job was not the best, I used to work in a restaurant, work conditions and my wage wasn't the ideal.  The beginning wasn't easy. Of course, there are always a few coworkers who aren't easy to manage. It's been almost 2 months that I am working there and now I feel really great. There is a dentist who gave me the opportunity to assist to many of his treatments so now I know most of the dentistry instruments and treatments. They are currently forming me to become a dental assistant. Last week, the same dentist had two patient until 11 at night and no one was there to assist him so he asked me to do it.
